HERALD & REVIEW: Cape Air moving forward at Decatur Airport as SkyWest appeals for contract

The Decatur Herald and Review is reporting, “Plans are moving ahead for Cape Air to take over as Decatur Airport’s next air service provider, but SkyWest Airlines isn’t giving up on its proposal to bring jet service to the community.

SkyWest on Tuesday filed a petition asking the Department of Transportation to reconsider its decision to award a two-year contract for service to Cape Air, which is scheduled to start next month offering flights to St. Louis Lambert International Airport and O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. The department awarded Cape Air the contract Dec. 21.

Major local employers, especially Archer Daniels Midland Co., had persuaded the Decatur Park District board to support SkyWest and its proposal of jet service to Chicago. But the Department of Transportation said the Utah-based airline would have cost $700,000 more in federal subsidies than Cape Air — a cost that it said was not feasible…”
