The State Journal-Register is reporting, “Last week, Renee Vespa received good news. The 52-year-old Spaulding resident was able to call and schedule an appointment in December with a Washington University School of Medicine doctor.

Before the state budget impasse began in 2015, such an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon wouldn’t have been a big deal for a well-insured patient such as Vespa, a program adviser at the Illinois Department of Human Services.

But about a year ago — like many other providers — some departments in the St. Louis-based physician group stopped accepting new patients insured through Illinois’ State Employees Group Insurance Program because of long delays in payment…”
