The Rockford Register Star is reporting, “Manufacturing is a bright spot in the Rockford region’s improving economic picture, even though manufacturers employ far fewer people than they did decades ago.
With the automotive sector leading the way, a quarter of manufacturing jobs created in Illinois from 2010 through 2017 were created here in the Rockford region, according to an analysis of data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The Rockford region made up 2.5 percent of the entire state’s workforce and 5.3 percent of the state’s manufacturing workforce in 2017.
“We have seen overall employment declines over the long history of manufacturing, but since the recession we have seen strong growth in that sector,” said Tom Austin of the IDES Economic Information & Analysis Division. “We are fortunate to have that growth in the Rockford (metropolitan statistical area), especially in our transportation sector, but others have also expanded.”…”
